Wacky Rig Vs. Texas Rig

It’s springtime and Jeff Sprague loves to fish a Texas Rig and Wacky Rig on the Lew’s HyperMag Spinning Reel. Although they are similar techniques, there are subtle differences in each set-up than can help you fish each rig more efficiently.

For a Texas Rig, Jeff likes to use a lighter tungsten weight between 1/8-1/16oz. He spools the Lew’s HyperMag Spinning Reel with 15# Strike King Tour Grade Braided Line and will use 10# Strike King Fluorocarbon Line for the leader.  The fluorocarbon leader has no stretch which prevents fish from seeing the braided line, this is important, especially in clearer water. He uses a Strike King KVD Finesse Worm on a size three worm hook. To finish out the set-up, Jeff prefers a 7’ medium heavy rod because it has more backbone and allows him to hook the fish better.

The Wacky Rig is fished a little slower than the Texas rig but is similarly set-up. Jeff will downsize his line and will spool his Lew’s HyperMag Spinning Reel with 10# Strike King Tour Grade Braided Line using an 8# Strike King Fluorocarbon Line leader. He rigs this line to a wacky worm hook which has a small mono leader on it to help keep it from getting hung up. However, he will use a 7’ medium action rod for the wacky set-up since he is using lighter line. Like with the Texas Rig, a Strike King KVD Finesse Worm works great wacky style also. “This is what I’m throwing in open water or when I am fishing around cover and want a slow rate of fall. Again, the Lew’s HyperMag Reel is key because I can skip, pitch and flip it into areas where other guys can’t get to,” says Jeff. Both of these techniques are a way to catch a lot of fish in the springtime no matter what part of the country you’re in.
